So what makes Gambino’s ‘Redbone’ such an addicting song? Well, many would agree that its sensual ‘funk’ feel, and combination of hypnotizing vocals make the track worthy of repeat. Very few fans even know what the song is about. The lyrics are somewhat of a riddle despite their soulful flow and funk slow jam vibe.

HOOK

“But stay woke, niggas creepin. They gon’ find you, gon catch you sleepin (oh). Now stay woke, niggas creepin, now don’t you close your eyes” – Redbone (Childish Gambino)

The title Redbone implies the song is speaking of a light-complexioned black woman, but to summarize the song based on that alone would be too simplistic and not do it enough justice. There seems to be a combination so narratives going on here.  It seems there’s a love interest for this woman, but she finds it difficult to commit to a relationship. This could be due to the array of gentleman who desire her. Perhaps as we peer into this woman’s love affair, we can explore those of our own and on a broader spectrum the interconnected race relations of society in general as the term “Stay Woke” is repeated over and over and reminds us to be conscious of what’s occurring to us on a broader level.

  1. I’m so glad he is finally getting some of the appreciation he deserves. I’ve been a huge fan since his EP’s and Derrick Comedy days.
He has also had popular stand up comedy specials (not sure why that wasn’t mentioned).
I need to address this, there is no album called “I Know, I’m Sorry”. He’s had several EP’s but his 3 albums are Awaken My Love, Because the Internet and Camp. “Heartbeat” is from his Camp album. Not only did y’all make up an album title but you referenced it twice in this article. I love that y’all are showing him some love but seriously, do a quick Google search before posting.
